The Beta Glucans in GUT FIRST prime your horse’s immune system to protect against disease and stress. Stress, heat, trailering, stall confinement, breeding, feed, social changes and pathogen exposure can challenge a horse’s immune system resulting in reduced performance, respiratory disease and Leaky Gut Syndrome. Beta Glucans’ role is to alert the immune system of foreign substances or pathogens. Including a bioavailable source of Beta Glucans in the diet can help support the immune system .Our beta glucan source, algae, is mostly the bioavailable 1,3-beta glucan, whereas yeast provides mostly the less bioavailable 1,6-beta glucan. Rather than fully activating the immune system (which depletes available calories) the Beta Glucans in GUT FIRST prime the immune system without draining crucial nutrients and energy.

BACILUS SUBTILIS – INHIBITING PATHOGENIC BACTERIA WITHOUT HARMING BENEFICIAL BACTERIA

GUT FIRST contains PB6 a proprietary, patented strain of Bacillus Subtilis. PB6 is a unique, safe and naturally occurring probiotic that has been proven to kill a number of equine-specific pathogens – including a variety of Clostridium species.

It has demonstrated equine safety in foals and adults. PB6 secretes one or more biocidal proteins that inhibit certain equine-specific strains of pathogenic bacteria such as Clostridium Perfringens. These proteins disrupt the membrane of bacteria leaking the cell contents and ultimately killing the pathogenic bacteria without harming beneficial gut microflora. Pathogenic bacteria like Clostridium Perfringens create lesions in the small intestine lining allowing harmful pathogens and toxins to pass through into the bloodstream resulting in intestinal inflammation and disease. PB6 in GUT FIRST, inhibits pathogenic bacteria growth, maintaining a healthy microbial balance in the digestive tract.

Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid (or SCFA) created when the good bacteria in your horses’ gut breaks down dietary fiber. During times of stress adding additional butyrate to the diet can help to maintain a healthy intestinal lining.

• Butyrate and Zinc strengthen the lining of the gut and the tight junctions (vital to the health and performance of the horse as it improves nutrient absorption and provides a strong barrier against pathogens, parasites and toxins). If the intestinal barrier is compromised – either through damage of the cells that make up the lining or by breakdown of the tight junctions – harmful substances can cross into the bloodstream. This damage is typical of horses under stress and is referred to as Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS). Providing Butyric Acid and Zinc directly to the cells that make up the intestinal barrier can lead to a lower incidence of LGS improving performance, behavior and overall health.
